Himalayan Rabbits
The Himalayan is an enchanting and elegant breed of rabbit. They are gentle and laid back bunnies with just the right amount of curiosity and spirit. Himmies are commonly raised for exhibition and as pets.
Himalayans are small rabbits, weighing just 2-4 pounds. They have a uniquely long and slender shape. On the show table, they are best evaluated with the front feet under the eyes and rear feet in line with the hip to best display their length and cylindrical body structure. The top and side lines should be smooth and straight, with no flare or dips. The Himalayan has a snow-white body with points of color on the nose, ears, feet, and tail. The color points may be black, blue, chocolate, or lilac. All have pink eyes.
Most Himalayans are excellent mothers and easily raise 4-6 kits per litter. Some lines produce exceptionally large litters of 8-10 kits and raise every kit without issue. Himalayans are generally healthy rabbits and live approximately 7 years. Despite their small size, Himalayans do NOT possess dwarf genetics seen in some other small rabbit breeds and therefore do not see the anomalies that dwarfism can cause. Himalayans can be prone to obesity and care must be taken to avoid excessive feeding and provide plenty of exercise.
Perhaps the Himalayan’s best known trait is their temperament. Himmies are the rag dolls of the rabbit world. They are extremely laid back and even affectionate with their people. Himalayans have a low to moderate activity level. They have minimal grooming requirements, just an occasional brushing and regular nail trimming. The Himalayan is an excellent breed choice for any age wanting a show rabbit or companion.
